LINBURY PRIZE FOR STAGE DESIGN
When one compares the ample provision for postgraduate study in costume design in the USA with the complete absence of specialist postgraduate courses in the UK the inadequacy of the British situation becomes all too plain. In the absence of any practical assistance for young designers from official quarters the work of the Linbury Trust is extremely valuable in focusing attention on stage design and assisting young designers on their hazardous first steps in the professional world. This is not of specific relevance to costume designers but as the Prize is the only one of its kind it seemed appropriate to mention its place in the education scene and hope that further imaginative schemes of this kind may be created to assist young designers to find their feet.
The Linbury Prize for Stage Design is awarded biennially. It is open to final year students resident in Britain attending a BA Hons, or two-year HND, or postgraduate course. Up to 12 successful entrants are selected to display their work at the RNT, and four winners receive both prize money and a design commission. Submissions are required by the spring of 2001, 2003 &c.
